Ralph Ingersoll was a journalist who visited China, Russia, and England in the early days of the war as a correspondent. After Pearl Harbor he enlisted in the US Army. By the time he was shipped to Tunisia he was 42 years old. There, he was attached to an Engineers company that provided support to a Ranger battalion that kicked off the battle of El Guettar. The engagement he describes here took less than a day and involved fewer than 2,000 men (500 Americans against 1,400 Italians).
