Description:

First British edition. Hardback. Blue cloth binding. 195mmx135mm. No dustwrapper. 230pp. In her introduction, the translator explains that Mussolini wrote this novel in 1909 when working in Trent, then part of Austria, as Secretary to the Socialist Chamber of Labour. His work included acting as assistant to Cesare Battisti, editor of IL POPOLO and its weekly suuplement LA VITA TRENTINA. This romantic story was apparently written as a serial in the magazines and was popular with readers . but this aspect of his career ended when he wrote one day in IL POPOLO that "the frontier of Italy does not end at Ala" (the local frontier station), and was promptly put in gaol for the night and deported. This copy has the plate of THE HANDY STORES CIRCULATING LIBRARY of 14 Aikenhead Road, Glasgow. and the curious thing is that no-one seems to have borrowed it but it is still rather grubby!
