Description:

12mo (130 x 85mm). [2], 214pp. Engraved frontispiece depicting six young girls and boys playing music. Title page decorated with lyre and music sheets. French calf gilt only light rubbed, spine with diapered pattern and stamped with metaphorical title "CORBEILLE DE FLEURS" (literally a ‘basket of flowers’). Approximately 60 blank leaves following text, for composition, and few leaves variously inscribed in French in a youthful script, a mid-19th century hand, a table for good and bad days out of the twelve months a pressed violet and an original couplet for one page and a quarter. It is definitely a well-used songbook, in wonderful shape, with a wealth of poetic verse. 1811 French Chansonnier for young girls and boys to practice their voices. This chansonnier appeared also in 1823 with a calendar page and is thus often classified as an almanac. In the wake of the French Revolution, singing was a highly regarded activity by the French people. Singing had been one of the many activities that formed a spectrum of resistance, which led to eventual riot and rebellion. Composing and performing songs, in turn, retained much value since they served as a necessary pressure valve. Songs celebrated the intimacy of the bourgeois family and the triumph of virtue over caste. This songbook contains the lyrics for songs of devotion, hope, morality and love of family. These songbooks remain to be an important part of popular French culture from the first decade of the 19th century. Most chansonniers were compiled in France, but there are some also in Italy, German and Iberian Peninsula. Bookseller Inventory # D7947
