Publication Date: 1918

Description:

Folio sheet music format in red/white/black illustrated and pictorial wraps(inset b/w photo of soldier surrounded by little black bears playing instruments against red background on front (S.Taber illustrator); photo of soldiers at Camp Kearney on rear.) Sherman & Clay ed. 1918. Very Good+/: wraps exhibit some minor edgewear from routine handling including 3" long narrow closed tear tape-repaired on interior by prev owner; text itself clean & bright. 4pp. including front & rear covers.**** Subtitled 'U.S. Government Official Song of the 40th(Sunshine) Division' this unique piece of California-themed sheet music was inspired by the homesick Sunshine Division soldiers stationed originally at Camp Kearney. The words implore the Girl of the Golden West not to be blue and know that her soldier is coming back "after wading through Europe and doing our bit, the road to the West is the trail we'll hit." Also notable is the dedication of the song-in march tempo-to Colonel Thornwell Mullally who was head of the executive committee for the Preparedness Day Parade in San Francisco which was held in S.F. on July 22, 1916. The parade was bombed and Thomas Mooney was tried and convicted of the bombing in the celebrated Mooney case. Allover a very nice copy of a scare piece which interweaves music with California's vibrant history. In the Charles Templeton Sheet Music Collection at Mississippi State University and in Brown University holdings. #70013. Bookseller Inventory # ABE-10593557897
