Anonymous poster, printed in fuschia ink. 21-15/16 by 17 inches. Most likely, this event aimed to raise funds for those arrested during the May 1, 1971, protests against the Viet Nam War in Washington, D.C. The highly organized action aimed to disrupt the city by blocking roads and bridges through non-violent means. According to the New York Times, 'The government placed 12,000 federal troops at strategic points around the city, while 5,100 local police officers and 1,500 National Guardsmen swept through the crowd of protesters, estimated by The Times to be around 12,000 to 15,000 people. About 7,000 protesters were arrested that day, in addition to 5,000 the previous and following days. Most of the arrested protesters were held briefly at R.F.K. Stadium before being released without charge; it was the largest mass arrest in American history.'--The Learning Network blog, retrieved 6/23/14. First edition (first printing). A fine example.
