About this Item
427 pp., illustrations, bibliography, index. The impact of civilization on the Australian environment has been profound, particularly in the last 200 years. This has affected the biodiversity of this continent with declines in the distribution and abundance of many fauna and flora species. What do we known about all this and perhaps more importantly what can we do about it? This book grapples with the main cause of these problems and how we might be able to fix them. The book is meant to help decision makers with the key issues of conservation but with a practical angle. The genesis of the book was a conference in 1993 that drew on the expertise of many scientists and practitioners of land management. The book begins by exploring why biodiversity is important. Many of the problems that affect nature conservation can be effectively grouped under themes or threatening processes. So, the main part of the book deals with the major factors threatening our biodiversity: habitat loss; degradation and pollution of water resources; weeds and feral animals; commercial use of native plants and animals and the effects of fire. The final part of the book deals with ways in which government and community may solve these problems. 0.0. Seller Inventory # 0949324590AI072715
