Two volumes. Volume One 1851-1899; Volume Two 1900-1921. Jordan (b. 1851--d. 1931) was the first president of Stanford University (1891-1913) after serving in the same capacity at Indiana University (1885-1891). He was a man of many interests and wide experience in ichthyology, education, pacifism, medicine, politics, eugenics, etc. These two massive volumes reflect all of those interests. Publisher's dark green cloth with gilt lettering. The dust wrappers have a few pin holes here and there (mostly caused by stress from the large size of the books) but are remarkably unworn or chipped. 719 and 906 pages, including index.
