Book Description University of Minnesota Press for the Minnesota Society of the Colonial Dames of America, Minneapolis, Minnesota, 1938. Cloth. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First Thus. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. "This is one of the earliest travel-adventure stories of North America, and the earliest printed description of the upper reaches of the Mississippi River. originally published in Paris in 1683, it ranked with the Bible as a best-seller in its time. Father Louis Hennepin {1640-1701?}, Franciscan Recollect friar, madfe his famous exploring trip in 1679-80. The territory he saw and described is that that now covered by the states of Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, and Minnesota. The name Louisiana that applied to ther entire Mississippi Valley. In the course of his travels up the river, Hennepin saw Lake Pepin, saw and named the Falls of St. Anthony, went of a buffalo hunt, noted lakes, rivers, flora, and fauna. He and his companions were captured by the Sioux, taken to a village on Lake Mille Lacs in modern Minnesota, rasther badly treated by the natives, and released only through the intervention of Du Lhut. The section on manners and customs of the Indians is especially entertaining. The only other translation of this work, by thwe American historian Father John G. Shea in 12880, is now almost as difficult to obtain as the priginal itself. Miss Cross's new translation not only makes available again an important source book but also fills the need for a free translation that presents the ideas but not the bad grammar of the original." This book has 190 pages. the spine of the dust jacket is slightly faded. There is a tiny piece of tape affixed to the upper portion of the spine of the dust jacket. There is a tiny quarter-size water stain on the front cover of the dust jacket. Bookseller Inventory # 060845
