John Evelyn (1620-1706) was an English writer, gardener and keeper of a famous diary during the English Civil Wars. A contemporary of Samuel Pepys, he serves as a good counter to Pepys diary. The diary sheds light on both culture and politics. He witnessed the deaths of Charles I, Oliver Cromwell, the Great Plague of London, and the Great Fire of 1666. His book 'Fumifugium' was the first book on air pollution in London. Very good clean copy. Seller Inventory # 14566
