Title: Dogs, Volumes I and II (Naturalist's Library...
Publisher: W. H. Lizars (n.d. but 1850s?), Edinburgh
Publication Date: 1850
Book Condition: Very Good
267 and 299 pages plus plates. Roughly 4-1/2 by 7 inches. The first volume covers wild dog relatives, like wolves and foxes; the second volume is devoted to domestic breeds. Volume I begins with a biographical sketch of the zoologist Peter Simon Pallas; volume II with a short life of Felix D'Azara. A set prized for its many color plates. Later edition, bound in half calf over marbled-paper covered boards. Complete with all 73 plates, 63 handcolored. As usual, the numbering and placement is a bit chaotic. Volume I calls for 33 plates but there are actually 35, many without numbers. Volume 2 has all 38 plates. Plates 31 and 22* bound out of order. One plate not numbered (2*), plate numbers 15, 18, 21, 22, and 23 duplicated; plates 22*, 23, and 23* not numbered. Bindings with wear to edges and corners, but attractive, well-preserved copies. Leather bookplate on front pastedown of each volume. Bookseller Inventory # 124571
