Description:

1st Printing. Signed. 95 pages. Published in 2007. The photographer's third collection of male and female nudes. One of the most beautiful erotic art photography titles of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. An austerely elegant production by Mona Kuhn and Gerhard Steidl: Oversize-volume format. Pictorial hard boards with cream cloth overboards and titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Mona Kuhn. Short story by the great American writer Frederic Tuten. Essay by Gordon Baldwin. List of Plates and Acknowledgments appended at the end. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Gottingen, Germany to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Mona Kuhn's "Evidence". Probably the photographer's single most beautiful collection of male and female nude portraits in solo, duo, and group shots. "Critics have observed that Mona Kuhn's subjects seem 'nude but not naked'. Completely relaxed before the camera, they give the impression that nothing could clothe them better than their own skin. Kuhn weaves together gestures from the traditional iconography of nude studies with the comfortable body language of her subjects, creating a visual patois at once classical and contemporary. Beneath the mellow surfaces of her photographs lies an explosive energy: The artist's controlled play with the power of sensuality. Tension and uneasiness co-exist with sunlight and soft flesh. The subjects and their gestures are suggestive but ultimately ambiguous. Kuhn works very close to her subjects, often with a depth of field of only a few inches. Real world and image world seem to blend together as her figures unite the reality of human complexity with the blissful essence of Nature. With only sparse reference to physical surroundings, they appear to float in an idyllic picture space, part of a dream-like narrative just beyond the viewer's comprehension. These exceptional photographs exist in a space created by the artist and subject alone. The viewer is given a single fascinating glimpse, suspended in time, and then an enduring sense of the resilience and vulnerability of the human body" (Publisher's blurb). The nude portrait is very hard to do well. Martin Parr, who included a tiny handful of erotic art photography titles in the three-volume "The Photobook", says as much, although his reservations are disingenuous about the photographic nude: That it is unnecessarily voyeuristic and lurid. Well, ALL photographs are inherently voyeuristic, and a lot of them are pretty lurid. What makes Kuhn's third collection a genuine advance over her previous ones is her deeper exploration of the physical body-as-spirit. These are, in the end, portraits of beings who somehow, somewhere transcend mere human flesh and approach the ethereal. An absolute "must-have" title for Mona Kuhn collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in black pen-marker on the title page by Mona Kuhn. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary erotic art photoraphy classic. This is one of very few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies available online command as much as $125. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. 54 duotone and color plates. One of the most brilliant photographers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER MONA KUHN TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 3865213723. Bookseller Inventory # 11784

Synopsis: Critics have observed that Mona Kuhn's subjects seem "nude but not naked . Completely relaxed before the camera, they give the impression that nothing could clothe them better than their own skin." Kuhn, who photographs in the naturist or nudist community, often in domestic interiors, weaves together gestures from the traditional iconography of nude studies with the comfortable body language of her subjects, creating a visual patois at once classical and contemporary. And beneath the mellow surfaces of her photographs lies an explosive energy: the artist's controlled play with the power of sensuality. Tension and uneasiness coexist with all that sunlight and soft flesh. The subjects and their gestures are suggestive but ultimately ambiguous. Tenuously held planes of focus provoke the imagination. Kuhn works very close to her subjects, often with a depth of field of only a few inches. Real world and image world seem to blend together as her figures unite the reality of human complexity with the blissful essence of nature. With only sparse reference to physical surroundings, they appear to float in an idyllic picture space, part of a dreamlike narrative just beyond the viewer's comprehension. These exceptional photographs exist in a space created by the artist and subject alone--the viewer is given a single fascinating glimpse, suspended in time, and then an enduring sense of the resilience and vulnerability of the human body.
