Synopsis:
A series of studies examine the problems central to economies of the past and present. Six chapters provide detailed examinations of the behavior of groups of individuals in a broad selection of periods and places, and demonstrate the power of economic approaches to the analysis of human behavior in a wide range of market settings. Leading economic historians present the results of their research on the causes of the open field system in medieval England, the growth of servitude and slavery in colonial America, productivity change in nineteenth-century whaling, the inequality of wealth on the American frontier, the profitability of British imperialism, and the breakdown of racial discrimination in twentieth-century Southern labor markets. All of these studies illustrate the rewards that are gained by blending the economists use of analytical and statistical techniques with the historian's careful attention to reconstructing the past through the use of a variety of types of evidence.
