FROM THE PUBLISHER - It has been said that this play, the first of its kind in English, influenced the form to some extent of the famous play in the middle of Ulysses. The explosive technique employed, together with the economy of statement, is certainly suggestive of the novel form of the stage directions In the Walpurgis Nacht fantasia of Mr. Joyce. It is obvious that there are other factors in the Ulysses play beside that provided by the form of The Enemy of the Stars, but the fundamental structure of the two is noticeably similar. Therefore this play of Mr. Wyndham Lewis’s, written and published in 1914, marks, in English letters, together with his novel TARR (pub. 1918), the opening of an epoch. Compared with the more fully developed and more technically resourceful work of the master-craftsman author of Ulysses, this ‘granite flower’ might be said to stand as an archaic exemplar of this now fully exploited art form. While his is the most fertile mind of its age, Mr. Wyndham Lewis the controversialist has to some extent side-tracked his public and caused them to lose sight of the fact that the controversialist is merely the surface manifestation of what essentially is a fundamental artist-principle. To take a concrete example, the case of Cezanne may be cited. Mr. Lewis may very well come to be regarded in literature as an initiator in literary forms in the way that Cezanne was an initiator, in contrast to the more common type of craftsman-exploiter.
