Publisher: Rochester, N.Y.: Adams & Dabney

Publication Date: 1862

Binding: Soft cover

Book Condition: Very Good

Description:

64pp. Frontis. woodcut of Richmond prison. First edition. Original salmon-colored wraps. Back wrap missing piece lower left, affecting portions of three letters of an advertisement. Sewn as issued, very good. NEVINS I, 198: ‘A very early prisoner’s account; moderate toward captors but unfavorable comments on several; much on hospitals and daily life.’ COULTER, TRAVELS IN THE CONFEDERATE STATES 321: ‘Merrell’s pamphlet is not only one of the best accounts of prison conditions in Richmond during the first year of the war, but it also contains valuable comments on the Southern attitude toward Federal prisoners. It bears evidence of being an honest attempt to tell the truth in a straightforward story.’ The first 13 pages of this pamphlet describe Merrell’s experiences at First Manassas in excellent details, including his wounding and capture in his New York’s regiment’s engagement with the 37th Virginia Infantry. The rest of it, as NEVINS and COULTER point out, is full of fresh details of prison and hospital life. A nice item, obviously written from very recent memory In fact, as the last paragraph states, Merrell was still on furlough when the work was published. DORNBUSCH I, NY-284A. NICHOLSON p.512.
