302 p. At the age of nineteen, Carl Lomen went from Minnesota to Nome, Alaska, for a summer vacation with his father. Soon the whole family moved to Alaska, where they saw a future for Alaska and for the Eskimos in a future reindeer industry. This is a fascinating tale of life in a rugged, pioneering place, and of the ups and downs of business and dreams. The reindeer business did not succeed, but the family business interests (mining equipment, coal, lumber, oil) still were centered in Alaska at the time of publication of this book. Introduction by Admiral Richard E. Byrd. Teal blue hard cover is near fine with a tiny amount of rubbing at extremities. The dust jacket, which is mostly white (and which pictures a man—presumably Lomen—with reindeer on the front and a portrait of Lomen on the back), is very clean but for light rubbing along the back edge at the spine; not price clipped; a very small amount of chipping and one small crease at the top of the spine.
