Chas C. Rhodes, PA. Gihon states in the preface that he arrived in Kansas with staunch anti-Free-Soil sentiments, but after repeated evidence of the conduct of the pro-slavery side, he was forced to see the error of his ways. John Geary was appointed by President Pierce to be the third territorial governor of Kansas, a position he held until March, 1857. Includes descriptions of the Shawnee Mission, Indian reserves, work of anti-slavery emigrant societies, and the general bloody atmosphere of the territory in the wake of the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854. Geary become a Major General in the Civil War and later Governor of Pennsylvania. Very good copy of the first edition. Small tear on the top of the spine.
