Holliday (Parke-Bernet's Holliday Sale #1207), with his attractive bookplate on the front pastedown endpaper. Previously from the collection of Kansas governor and 1936 presidential candidate Alf Landon, with his distinctive bookplate on the front free endpaper. Wise sailed on the ship "Independent" during the Mexican War, and related his experiences in the war, his perceptions of California, and other details, including his conversation with a survivor of the Donner Party. Howes W593. This first edition is scarce in this original binding. The book is clean and tight, with chipping in the cloth along spine edges, at corners, and at spine extremities.
