400 pages. Illustrated. A collection of lore, history, adventures, and legend about early traders in the Northwest Territory, primarily from the Dakotas, where Van Osdel spent most of his life. He was a frequent candidate for governor and lt. governor and served a number of terms in the state legislature, representing Yankton County, in southeastern South Dakota. This book is frequently dated to 1915 (see the WorldCat database). However, Van Osdel's biography in the 1905 edition of the South Dakota Legislative Manual states that Van Osdel is 'well known throughout the state as the author of 'Historic Landmarks,'' suggesting it had been published sometime before that date. Near fine (hardcover), with light shelf wear and one gathering that is coming loose. Bookseller Inventory # 77479
