About this Item
Inscribed, signed, and dated by the author on the blank page after the front endpaper: "To my friend Edmund Stirling / J. Hampton Moore / July 91." Also signed by a former owner on the front endpaper: "Purchased at [??] Book stall, October 1905 / John Irving Dillon"; Dillon has signed it again on the front endpaper (in pencil) and again (with date) under the author signature on the following page. Book is rare, especially signed by the author (possibly unique). Philadelphia's Five O'Clock Club didn't last long but was at least partially the inspiration for the Five O'Clock clubs that have been established in recent years to help connect job seekers with good positions. Book is bound in brown cloth-covered boards with a gold clock (showing five o'clock, of course) design on the front board and gold lettering on the spine; top page edges tinted brown; numerous black and white photos; a copy of the grandfather-clock illustration laid in. The pages are intact but the book is fragile, with the binding cracked at the front board and separating from the folios; spine slanted; corners and spine ends bumped with edgewear and fraying; closed tears at top and bottom of front spine edge. No dust jacket, presumably as issued. Mylar protected. Seller Inventory # 006799
