Book Description The Leon County News, 1977. PAPERBACK. Book Condition: Good. B00L2FHUQ4 1977 reprint, The Leon County News (Centerville, Texas), 5 3/8 x 7 3/4 inches tall stapled paperbound in acqua printed covers, [4], 36 pp. Slight staining to covers, with a small ink mark to the upper margin of the front cover. Prior owner bookplate to verso of front cover and embossed stamp to title page. Otherwise, a very good copy - clean, bright and unmarked - of this uncommon local history. ~K~ The legislature of the Republic of Texas authorized Leon County in 1846 from part of Robertson County, and named it in honor of Martin De Leon, the founder of Victoria, Texas. However, local tradition holds that it is named for a yellow wolf of the region commonly called the leon ('lion' in Spanish). The county was organized that same year with its first county seat at Leona. In 1851 the county seat was moved to Centerville since Leona was in the far southern part of the county. Contents: A History of Leon County; Journalism in Leon County; Sold Eggs to Jay Gould; Rebellion in Centerville; Steamboating on the Trinity; When the Railroad Came to Leon County; Leon County Oil; The Oldest House in Leon County; Oil; Buried Gold, Perhaps, at Oakwood; Killed by Indians; The Dr. Blackwell Incident; Capt. Davis' Boots; The Centennial Banquet; Community Names in Leon County; The Tree of Justice; Draws Mexican War Pension; Neighborly Calls; Turn Out the Little Ones; Results of Blood Tests; Poker; Leon County Today; Leon County in Brief.
