Description:

1st Printing. Signed. 124 pages. Published in 2015. Retrospective collection of black-and-white photographs. One of the most important photographic projects of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a very small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. "Autographed Copy" white round sticker pasted in front. An austerely elegant production by Nick Brandt: Elephant-sized volume format. Black hard boards with white titles on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs and text by Nick Brandt. Printed in 300-line tritone on PhoenixMotion Zantur 170 gsm stock paper by Meridian Printing Rhode Island to the highest standards. Like all of Nick Brandt's books, the production values are exemplary in their crispness, warmth, and tonal range. They do justice to their majestic subject. In publisher's original plastic wrappers. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents, in a stupendous production, Nick Brandt's "Inherit The Dust". "Life-size images of East Africa's disappearing animals installed in the wastelands that have replaced their habitats. Three years after the completion of his trilogy ('On This Earth', 'A Shadow Falls', and 'Across The Ravaged Land'), Brandt returned to Africa to photograph the escalating changes to the continent's natural world and its animals. In a series of epic panoramas, he recorded the impact of man in places where animals used to roam but no longer do. In each location, Brandt erected a life-size panel of one of his portrait photographs, showing groups of elephants, rhinos, giraffes, lions, cheetahs, and zebras, placing the displaced animals on sites of explosive urban development, new factories, wastelands, and quarries. The contemporary figures within the photographs seem oblivious to the presence of the panels and the animals represented in them, who are now no more than ghosts in the landscape. Includes this new body of panoramic photographs along with original portraits of the animals used in the panoramas, the unique emotional animal portraiture for which Brandt is recognized" (Publisher's blurb). Nick Brandt is our latter-day Peter Beard, devoted to photographing Africa, a vanishing continent, not just its vanishing species. As such, he is embarked on one of photography's earliest, oldest, and most noble vocations: To capture a place for posterity before it finally disappears. His animal portraits are monumental in both senses: In terms of their physical scale and even more important, in their grand, tragic vision. An absolute "must-have" title for Nick Brandt collectors. This Autographed Copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black ink-pen by Nick Brandt. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. Like all of his previous books, this title will become a contemporary photography classic. This is one of very few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online, is still in the publisher's original plastic wrappers, and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A scarce signed copy thus. 68 tritone plates. One of the most brilliant living photographers. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER NICK BRANDT TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0692520546. Synopsis: Three years after the completion of his trilogy, On This Earth, A Shadow Falls Across the Ravaged Land, Nick Brandt returned to East Africa to photograph the escalating changes to the continent's natural world and its animals. In a series of epic panoramas, Brandt recorded the impact of man in places where animals used to roam, but no longer do. In each location, Brandt erected a life-size panel of one of his portrait photographs-showing groups of elephants, rhinos, giraffes, lions, cheetahs and zebras-placing the displaced animals on sites of explosive urban development, new factories, wastelands and quarries. The contemporary figures within the photographs seem oblivious to the presence of the panels and the animals represented in them, who are now no more than ghosts in the landscape. Inherit the Dust includes this new body of panoramic photographs along with original portraits of the animals used in the panoramas, the unique emotional animal portraiture for which Brandt is recognized. There are also two essays by the artist: a text about the crisis facing the conservation of the natural world in East Africa, and behind-the-scenes descriptions of Brandt's elaborate production process, with accompanying documentary photographs.
Nick Brandt (born 1964) photographs exclusively in Africa. Born in Britain and currently based in Southern California, Brandt cofounded Big Life Foundation in 2010, which helps protect the endangered wildlife inhabiting a large area of East Africa.

About the Author: NICK BRANDT has exhibited his photographs in solo shows in the US, the UK, and Germany. Born and raised in England, he now lives in Topanga Canyon, California, with his wife and menagerie of adopted animals.
