Friedman was an economist for the Treasury Department and extremely influential during the Cooledge, Hoover and Roosevelt presidencies. He was frequently called to give expert testimony before Senate and House committees on taxation, railroads and profit sharing. A contemporary of economist John Maynard Keynes, Friedman did not achieve the level international fame as his British counterpart but was just as respected.Friedman perhaps carried even more influence in the growing Zionist movement of the early 20th century. He was a major player in the drive to create a Jewish state and was a frequent correspondent with world leaders, including Churchill, and wrote several books on the subject. Friedman was also a member of the American Economic Committee for Palestine, a member of the board and one of the founders of the American Friends of the Hebrew University.
