Publisher: J.-B. Brovellio, Lille

Publication Date: 1734

Binding: Hardcover

Book Condition: Very Good+

Description:

12mo (160 x 90 mm). 266pp. Full brown calf, covers with the crowned arms of Monsieur and Madame de May, "Bibliotheque de Mr. & Md. De May" (a tree and three diamant between chevron), spine gilt in compartments, marbled endpapers; (only slight edgewear, otherwise very good). The association with the de May library is most rare, few mid eighteenth century titles can be traced to this elite collection. Madame de May was reportedly the nurse of the future Philip V of Spain while he was Duke d’Anjou and the de May couple were part of the elite circle at the Palace of Versailles. OCLC records a Madame de May as the dedicatee of a musical score dated 1777 and printed in Paris, although details of their lives are few. Beautifully bound French noble couple’s copy of the anti-Protestant writing of Jacques-Béningne Bossuet a Dijonnaise bishop and influential spokesman who made great efforts to assert the rights of the French church for and with papal authority in Rome. Bishop Bossuet published widely during his ecclesiastical career making important refutations that would popularly grow his position in opposition to the Protestant movement. Bossuet is traditionally regarded as a "master" of French Roman Catholic thought, was viewed as an excellent preacher, and was greatly sympathized with among monarchs for his view on the absolute divine right of kings; for this latter position he would receive criticism in later times. This work concerns Bossuet’s reflections on the New Testament and presents his key justifications for the place of Catholic doctrine in his tumultuous times. Bossuet was embroiled with many biblical critics of his time and published his claims in the spirit of defense. OCLC reveals this 1734 edition is quite rare outside of France, earlier editions dating to 1710 and 1711 are far more common. Bossuet's works were amply reprinted throughout the 18th century, this copy was uniquely bound for noble elite in a characteristic French calf.
