Book Description Boston Little Brown 1919., 1919. G ex-library. Obituary from 1934 glued to ft endpapers, "A woman died Wed. who suffered more than 60 years of work, social ostracism, imprisonment & exile for just 6 months of triumph!" " Born in 1844 of a well-to-do Russian family, early in life she became imbued with a will to help the millions of down-trodden peasants. She traveled about Russia, trying to organize them to rebel against the rigorous rule of the Czars. For this she passed years of solitary confinement in the grim fortress of St. Peter & Paul.and spent decades of lonely hardship in the wastes of Siberia. When the revolution did come in March, 1917, she became the heroine of all the Russias. She rode in triumph from Siberia to Petrograd. She sat at the right hand of Kerensky, the president of the new republic. But with the Bolshevik revolution of November, her days of glory ended. The Communists had no use for this old woman who preached the pospel of human liberty. She was exiled again & eventually settled in Czechoslovakia, an outcast of the people whom she had given her life to help." Edge wear, corners bumped, spine sunned, some binding soil, library markings. Illustrated by Frontis of Breshkovsky. Bookseller Inventory # 032722
