Description:

Exceeding rare complete set of 14 original vintage 8 x 10 single weight black-and-white silver gelatin publicity stills featuring Carole Lombard and William Powell in the Universal Studios film adaption of Eric Hatch's novel MY MAN GODFREY directed by Gregory La Cava. These are special promotional advertising stills produced in tandem with the original release of this classic comedy; very, very few of these special stills survived in comparison to regular publicity stills from the movie. This unusual experiment in "pre-Mad Men" product placement gave individual national brand vendors the opportunity to sell their wares by piggy-backing on the success of the film. Each still sells a different product (sometimes leaving spaces for the advertisers to insert their names). Included products being peddled include: General Electric appliances, a silver cocktail service, luggage, tobacco, laundry and maid help, food stuffs, even the game of Monopoly (a candid behind-the-scenes shot with the ironic image of Powell, whose character is laid low by the Great Depression, playing the famous rags-to-riches game). Each still also features a small custom image of Powell and Lombard not found on the usual publicity stills. Highly desirable, only the second compete set of these images that we've encountered. In Very Good unrestored original condition. [Although only five images are shown here, we have scans of all fourteen so please feel free to email for extra images.] Compellingly cool artifact from Hollywood's Golden Age.
