Title: THE MARRIED LIFE OF HELEN AND WARREN

Publisher: Small, Maynard & Co. n.d. [1925]

Description:

"America's Best Known Couple." First book edition, Smith U-32. Original gilt-stamped green cloth, gilt on spine somewhat faded, otherwise excellent. In the original pictorial dust wrapper with slight wear. 8 + 404 pp. Edges lightly toned, occasional pencil marginalia. Indiana native Mabel Herbert Urner (1881-1957) married Lathrop C. Harper in 1912, but continued to use her maiden name in her professional life. She began a newspaper column in 1914, "The Married Life of Helen and Warren," which was a fictionalized account based primarily on her own married life. The column was eventually syndicated in over a hundred newspapers in the US, Canada, and Great Britain, and ran until 1944. The couple travelled extensively in Europe, where Harper hunted for rare books and Urner searched for 17th- and 18th-century collectibles, including samplers, antique glassware, and furniture; she amassed a collection that filled their Gramercy Park home and would eventually be bequeathed to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Urner also wrote a series of non-commercial but popular "Guidelets" on European travel and food at the request of her readers. This first edition is an uncommon book, with only six copies in OCLC, and rare with dust wrapper. Bookseller Inventory # 6702
