Description:

Vintage original 11 x 14" (28 x 35 cm.) lobby card, USA. Norman Kerry, Mary Philbin, Cesare Gravina, Edith Yorke, Dale Fuller, dir Rupert Julian, Erich von Stroheim, Universal. Set against a Viennese carnival, this tells the story of the merry-go-round of life, as it was just prior to World War I. Life was full of sophisticated love affairs and charm. A count, engaged to the daughter of the minister of defense, poses as a necktie salesman and flirts with the virtuous carny Agnes. She falls in love with him once he seduces and uses her, while the hunchback barker harbors an unrequited love for Agnes. This film came on the heels of Von Stroheim's FOOLISH WIVES on which he had gone far over budget. Producer Irving Thalberg could not fire Von Stroheim as he was both star and director. When time came to start this film, Thalberg would not allow Von Stroheim to both star and direct. When again, the film fell far behind and over budget, Thalberg did fire Von Stroheim after six weeks and replaced him with director Rupert Julian. Julian reshot much of Von Stroheim's footage, though his opening sequence remains. Released as one of Universal's "Super Jewel" films, it required a special road show style exhibition and higher ticket prices. In this card Agnes gives into the Count and the Barker exhibits his feelings for her. There is a bit of edge and corner wear, one tiny tear at the mid top blank margin and a tear at the right side blank margin, reinforced with archival tape. NEAR FINE. Bookseller Inventory # 10653
