Mannerheim journeyed on horseback across Asia from West to East as an intelligence agent of the Russian General Staff in 1906-0. His official activities were concealed under the cover of an ethnographic expedition. He had to carry out numerous scholarly pursuits, especially by making notes and collecting ethnographic material. In Lanzhou he established close cooperation with Father Leo van Dijk who on request provided him, i.a., with a set of 443 Chinese popular dieties drawn in India ink. This book presents that rare pantheon. Brief information is given on all identifiable figures besides references to literature. The original mythological comments of Father van Dijk are quoted for each item. This book is a rich source for everyone interested in Chinese folk religion and its iconography. No similar work exists comprising such an extensive repertoire of individual figures. Seller Inventory # 9519403671FIN042016
