Book Description London: Edited and published by James Wilson, M.D., Printed for J. Nourse, 1761. Two volumes, complete. First Edition., 1761. Two volumes. Octavo, original tan polished calf nicely rebacked in old-style calf, calf labels, xlvi, [ii], 341, [iii ads] pp. + [vi], 7-380 pp. Two plates and numerous diagrams. Benjamin Robins (1707-1751) was a scientist, mathematician and military engineer whose pioneering work on gunnery influenced the development of rifled gun barrels, the study of ballistics, and 18th century British artillery. This copy was formerly owned by the physicist and inventor Sir Benjamin Thompson, Count Rumford (1753-1814). The reverse of the title in Volume I bears a holograph inscription reading, "Presented to the Royal Institution / of Great Britain by Count Rumsford / 23 March 1801." The title itself bears the red stamp of the Royal Institution, with a contemporary holograph note indicating that this copy was a "Duplicate sold 1806." Born in Massachusetts, Thompson served in the loyalist army during the American Revolution as first a Lieutenant Colonel, and later a full Colonel. While working with the British army in America, he conducted experiments to measure the force of gunpowder. Thompson is better known, however, for his work after the war in the field of thermodynamics and for his improvements in chimney and furnace designs. The set was later owned by Edward Neville da Costa Andrade (1887-1971), with both volumes bearing his bookplate. Andrade was an English physicist primarily known for his work in determining the wavelength of a type of gamma radiation. In 1960 he also published a history of the Royal Society. The set is in Fine condition. Mathematics, Engineering, Military History, Science, Leather, Scholarly. axxsl. Bookseller Inventory # 3380gl
