442 pages; color lithographic frontispiece signed in the stone by the artist Max Ernst (1891-1976)German painter, sculptor, graphic artist and poet, considered one of the founders of the Dada movement and Surrealism; profusely illustrated in color, black and white with this artists' work; French text; biographical details, artistic chronology; large format, 12" x 12 1/2" approx. size; interesting laid-in photocopy of a customs document from Switzerland, via Panama, regarding the transport and sale of a Max Ernst screen "le Grand Ignorant" with pricing and handwritten comment regarding '.usage personale."; some edge wear, chipping and closed tears, discoloration, to the illustrated dustjacket; volume with a little rub to a short 1" on both edge-sides of the lithograph, would matte out, back endpaper corner creased, cloth discolored a bit at back; overall, in good condition and a good reference to this celebrated artists' work.
