William Cowper (1731-1800) was an English poet and hymnodist. His poetry was of everyday life and scenes of the English countryside. He became a fervent evangelical Christian and wrote many hymns under the influence of his friend John Newton ('Amazing Grace'). This Memoir recounts his early life as Cowper viewed it.
