Title: A Mission to the Indians From the Indian ...
Publisher: T. Ellwood Zell
Publication Date: 1862
Book Condition: Used: Very Good
Dust Jacket Condition: Not Issued
Edition: 1st Edition.
TRUE 1st Edition of this important early Western Indian Expedition to present-day Ohio and Indiana by Quaker missionaries Gerard Hopkins and George Ellicott in 1804. Edited by Tyson from the personal journals of Hopkins and Ellicott, this work was initially printed serially in 23 issues of the Friends Intelligencer, a Philadelphia Quaker weekly periodical (Field, Indian Bibliography). It was then privately printed in book format in a small run and given to prominent Quakers, at the expense of Tysons father and brother (Field). This Edition is the 1st serialized printing, covering 23 issues of the Friends Intelligencer from 1862, rescued from two bound volumes of the periodical. The issues overall are in Good to Very Good condition, with light dampstains to the lower fore edge corner of a few of the issues and thin linear discolorations to the fore edge of some, but not all, others. Otherwise these issues are in great shape with no loss of text or other major flaws. The title consists of the journal of Hopkins, approximately the first two thirds, while the last third, appendix, is the journal of Ellicott and added by Tyson during the editing process. This is a VERY RARE title, with only three records of auction during the 20th century, the last being in 1958, all three in the 2nd-printing book form. There are no records of a 1st Printing sale. There are no known copies currently on the market. OCLC locates 28 copies held institutionally. The inflation calculator at Rare Book Hub puts the gavel price based on the three 20th century auctions at $3500 in 2016 dollars for the 2nd printing (book form). While this may be a crude method at determining baseline value, it nonetheless allows one to make a ballpark judgement at the value of this important work. The title is referenced by Howes, Sabin and Field as an important work on early American Indian expeditions. (Field, Howes T454, Sabin 32917). Bookseller Inventory # 6417
