Description:

Red cloth gilt. From the library of and signed by former Confederate Cavalry Officer Robert Owen Allen. During the American Civil War, Owen was an Officer in the Stonewall Brigade."From Manassas, Virginia, Allen enlisted on July 21, 1861 and entered Company D of the 1st Virginia Cavalry. He was subsequently transferred to the 6th Virginia Cavalry on September 15, 1861 and remained a cavalryman of this regiment for the duration of the war. He was promoted to lieutenant and was at this grade during the cavalry battle of Brandy Station, Virginia, the largest cavalry engagement of the war. At a point in this June 9, 1863 engagement, Lieutenant Allen became a willing contestant of a deadly close-in duel with the commandant of the 8th New York Cavalry, Colonel Benjamin Franklin "Grimes" Davis. This Federal commander was endeavoring to steel his troopers ? "Come on 8th! Follow me!" ? when Allen engaged him. Davis countered with a saber thrust which Allen shirked. Counteracting, Allen sighted his enemy, and with a press of the trigger of his firearm, unsaddled the Union cavalry officer with a fatal shot.Allen survived the battle with a disabling wound, however he continued with the war until his April 15, 1865 parole in Winchester, Virginia." Light rubbing and edge wear. Spine very lightly sunned. Bookseller Inventory # 4825
