Book Condition: Near Fine
Dust Jacket Condition: Fine

12.5 x 9.5 in. 204 pages. With collotypye reproductions of Gauguin's watercolors, drawings, photographs, and woodcuts. In 1895, on his second trip to Tahiti, Gauguin took the manuscript for Noa Noa, written following his first trip, two years before. While on the island, he made woodblock prints, sketches, drawings, and small paintings, and pasted them into the text. This is a facsimile of that journal, carefully reproducing the Noa Noa manuscript, now in the Louvre, to match Gauguin's original. Widely considered a landmark artist's book, it was included in the Artist and the Book, 1860-1960 exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the Victoria and Albert show, From Manet to Hockney: Modern Artists' Illustrated Books, and in Jaroslav Andel's The Avant-Garde Book, 1900-1945. Riva Castleman, in A Century of Artists Books, called this 'a remarkable event in book publishing.' Limited to 400 copies, this is one of 320 bound in raffia, a coarse material made from palm trees. First edition. A near fine copy, with some cracking to the fragile binding at the spine, in a fine dust jacket that has been professionally lined with Japanese paper. The limitation bookplate (located on the inside front cover) has been covered by a previous owner's bookplate. In a very good example of the original slipcase, and rare thus. A spectacular looking copy of a great book. Bookseller Inventory # 16191
