1st Printing. Signed. 295 pages. Published in 1994. Rare Alice Munro collectible set. A fine copy of "Open Secrets" with a fine copy of "Carried Away" Limited Edition, both signed by Alice Munro. The author's eighth collection of short stories. The first appearance of the title in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now rare. Presents Alice Munro's "Open Secrets". Her eighth collection of short stories. "Munro is in a class of her own. No other writer working today is able to invest the humble story with more power, grace, or breadth" (Los Angeles Times). "Our Chekhov" (Cynthia Ozick). "A stunningly precise writer who is often able to say more in 30 pages than an ordinary novelist is capable of in 300. Munro writes about what are usually called ordinary people, but her intelligence, compassion, and astonishing power of perception enable her to give their lives a remarkable dignity, indeed redemption, since she shows how much of The Extraordinary can fit into that jam-packed emptiness called The Ordinary" (Nobel Prize Citation). "Carried Away" is, of course, the lead story of "Open Secrets". To celebrate the latter's publication, Alice Munro's publisher issued the short story in a Limited Edition that is presented as a lovely, treasurable keepsake. An absolute "must-have" set for Alice Munro collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen on the title page by Alice Munro. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page or bookplate. It comes with a rare copy of "Carried Away" Limited Edition, which is also very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen on the Front Numbered Page by the author. Throughout her long career, Munro made very few public appearances, and is a reluctant signer at best. As such, most of her books are signed on a bookplate, which are much less desirable than copies signed on either the title page or tipped-in page. This title is a great collection. As far as we know, this is the only such signed set available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, pristine beauties. A rare signed set thus. Winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2013. One of the greatest writers of our time. A fine collectible set. (SEE ALSO OTHER ALICE MUNRO TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0679435751. Synopsis: In this new collection of stories -- the finest yet from one of the most brilliant writers of fiction at work today -- whole lives, whole worlds, unfold with an ease, a richness, an absolute "rightness" that are breathtaking.
These are stories in which women are central. They are about lovers found and lovers lost but lodged still in the subconscious, about secrets that change lives, about people whose histories are opening out or coming to an end. Their power accumulates layer by layer as time and reality shift, identities become uncertain, truths surface.
A heart patient on a trip to her doctor on a hot summer's day has a revelation about the lasting power of an old love. A long-hidden secret sticks in the consciousness of a young woman, who, in an outrageous but entirely satisfying act, finally rids herself of its thrall. A romantic tale of capture and escape in the wilds of central Europe may or may not be true, but it comforts the hearer, who, on an adventure of her own, is fleeing her husband. Two childhood friends resolve their lives in a madcap and unexpected way on a memorable midsummer's eve. A pioneer woman home-steading in the Canadian wilderness with her new husband and his brother devises a clever stratagem for eluding the certain and dire fate that awaits her if she remains on the farm.
A wonderful gathering of stories in which once again, as she does with each new book, Alice Munro surpasses herself.
From the Back Cover: She is our Chekhov, and is going to outlast most of her contemporaries."
