About the Author: I was born in Leamore, Walsall in the July of 1936 where I spent a very happy childhood living with my parents and two brothers. The urge to travel and see the world developed when I was in my mid-teens and I joined the Gravesend Sea Training School in late November of 1953 aged seventeen. I sepnt many years as a Merchant Seaman twice giving up life at sea, once for eleven months and the other for seven years. During the latter break I got married and created a life ashore. For various reasons I returned to sea in 1969 for two years, finally giving up the sea for good in 1971, having moved the short distance to Bloxwich where I have lived quietly ever since.
