A boyhood friend of Ulysses Grant the book includes a seperate appendix of personal letters from General Grant. Ammen invented a life raft used in the Navy, and a small steam coastal defense vessel, a steel ram, the Katahdin. Ammen served aboard the U.S.S. Roanoke, Seneca, Sebago, Patapsco, and Mohican. Very good copy of the first edition. Blue boards with a bright gold and silver illustrated life raft, a sailing warhip and a double monitor type of ship. Strong binding. 553 pages.
