After starting out his career in vaudeville, he advanced to writing plays for Broadway theater and three of his plays in the 1920's were very popular and successful: The Torch Bearers (1922); The Show Off (1926); Craig's Wife (1925). Craig's Wife was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1925. The photo is inscribed to the actress Helen Lowell (b. 1866--d. 1937). She starred in both productions of The Torch Bearer and in The Show Off.
