About this Item
173 pp., illustrations. signed by author on title page. During the 1960's and early 1970's the dual territories of Papua and New Guinea were administered by Australia. This book is the story of a New Zealand Presbyterian minister, wife, and daughters who lived in PNG during these years of rapid change. The tasks were numerous. Building roads, school-rooms, houses, and boats were all part of the missionary task. The fact that there was little money for these required lateral thinking, inventive methods, and a lot of hard work in the tropical heat. Combating illness, managing schools, and running a Trade Store were everyday matters. The story of the Scarlett family and their many Papuan friends breaks away from stereotypes of "a missionary" that have been held by many. This honest recounting is from one who was there, and has retained vivid memories as well as diaries, to tell it as it was. 0.0. Seller Inventory # 0476013852AMA110814
