Description:

[1] 45pp., (of 76). Translated into verse by "A well-wisher to the mathematicks" [T.H., i.e. Thomas Hoy]. Loose in red cloth wrappers within custom slipcase, gilt lettered to spine "Ovid’s Art of Love"; (lacking the Musaeus, titled browned, light dampstains). From the library of Abel E. Berland, distinguished bibliophile, his bookplate on front wrap. Ovid’s instructional love elegy taught readers how to find, seduce and keep lovers. The first two books, aimed at men, contain sections which cover such topics as ‘not forgetting her birthday’, ‘letting her miss you - but not for long’ and ‘not asking about her age.’ Also known as the De Arte Amandi, Ovid wrote this work in a radical attempt to redefine relationships between men and women in Roman society, advocating a move away from paradigms of force and possession, towards concepts of mutual fulfillment. Thomas Hoy was and English physician and poet and contributed to translations of other classic texts before publishing these joined essays first in 1682. Ovid’s Art of Love has been wildly popular throughout the ages and particularly influential in modern concepts of chivalry and love. Wing 0646. Bookseller Inventory # D2468
