1st Printing. Signed. 16 pages. Published in 2007. Artist Book. The 39th title in the now-legendary "One Picture Book" Series by Nazraeli Press, one of the most superb ongoing projects of contemporary art photography. Limited Edition of 500 numbered and signed copies. Accompanied by one tipped-in, original print by the artist/photographer (hence the Series' name). An elegant production by Chris Pichler: Small-size volume format. Titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Daido Moriyama. Printed on pristine-white, archival stock paper to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Daido Moriyama's "Kuchibiru". A dazzling collection of photographs of kuchibiru ("lips"). His participation in the One Picture Book Series is a major coup. Moriyama's life-work has been to make us keenly aware of the photograph as the product of a mechanical instrument (the camera) and of the person behind the camera (the photographer) as the witness to the constant flow and throbbing intensity of the world. While the photograph shows reality as ever-changing, a painting makes it seem static, immutable, essential. A photograph is a fragment, not a record. "Taking a photograph does not mean to cut off a piece of time and place and save it as a record, but to remove color, palpability, smell, and sound from a time and place, and transpose the remnants into a distribution of varying densities of equivalent light and shadow. To take a photograph is to fragment the comprehensive sensory data" (Daido Moriyama). For many intelligent people, this is precisely the weakness of and problem with photography, that it reduces reality to our sense of sight. For Moriyama, it is the medium's inherent and unavoidable nature and therefore its strength, the starting point of all photography, whatever the individual photographer's talent or intentions may be. Flow, intensity, and fragments that build up to a cumulative and ecstatic visual experience: This is Moriyama's highly influential conception of photography. A Moriyama book is an event. "Kuchibiru" is no exception. An absolute "must-have" title for Daido Moriyama collectors. This copy is one of the Limited Edition, and is very prominently and beautifully numbered and signed in pencil on the Back Limitation Page by Daido Moriyama. It comes with an original print. This title is a great collection. This is one of very few copies of the Limited Edition still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: The last copies from the publisher command $250. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. 10 color plates, 1 original print. Five of Daido Moriyama's books were selected as among the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". The greatest Japanese photographer of our time. A fine collectible copy.
