Description:

1st Printing. Signed. 16 pages. Published in 2015. Artist Book. The 90th title in the now-legendary "One Picture Book" Series by Nazraeli Press, one of the most superb ongoing projects of contemporary art photography. Limited Edition of 500 numbered and signed copies. Accompanied by one tipped-in, original print by the photographers (hence the Series' name). An elegant production by Chris Pichler: Small-size volume format. Titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Daido Moriyama. Printed on pristine-white, archival stock paper to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Daido Moriyama's "Self". A static yet compelling series of black-and-white self-portraits ("selfies", if you will). Moriyama presents himself, provocatively, "in drag", wearing what appears to be a black wig, a blouse, and lipstick. Moriyama is, in effect, saying that self-portraits reveal only because they conceal. In this self-portrait sequence, Moriyama himself deliberately hides behind the mask called "make-up". As such, his self-portraits "comment" on the fact that every photographic self-portrait is artificial (rather than real) because it shows the subject in the best possible light, or in the light that the controlling subject would like to be seen. This is his second contribution to the One Picture Book Series, and his participation is a major coup. Every Moriyama book is an event, and "Self" is brilliant and exemplary. An absolute "must-have" title for Daido Moriyama collectors. This copy is one of the Limited Edition, indicated as such in pencil on the Back Limitation Page. It comes with a large-size original print (of his reversed self-portrait) that is very boldly and beautifully signed in gold pen-marker on recto by Daido Moriyama. It's a truly brilliant Moriyama touch: He has made his signature an integral part of his self-portrait, in a way that most signatures are not (or meant to be). This title is now collectible. This is one of very few copies of the Limited Edition still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: The remaining copies from the publisher command $150. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A scarce signed copy thus. 20 plates, 1 original print. Five of Daido Moriyama's books were selected as among the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". The greatest Japanese photographer of our time. A fine copy.
