Bibliographic Details

Title: THE POSTHUMOUS PAPERS OF THE PICKWICK CLUB (...

Publisher: Carey, Lea & Blanchard

Publication Date: 1837

Binding: Decorative Boards

Book Condition: Good

Edition: First Edition.

Description:

[Charles Dickens]. The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club: Containing a Faithful Record of the Perambulations, Perils, Adventures and Sporting Transactions of the Corresponding Members. Edited by "Boz." Philadelphia: Carey, Lea & Blanchard, 1837. Mixed Set: FIRST AMERICAN EDITIONS of Volumes III, IV, and V. FOURTH EDITIONS of Volumes I and II. A Good, sound, unsophisticated set of the FIRST BOOK EDITION (preceded by the English first edition released in parts). IN THE ORIGINAL PUBLISHER'S REDDISH-PURPLE CLOTH OVER DRAB BOARDS with white title labels on the spine lettered in black (largely legible but faded, in some cases to white]. Worn, a few stains, a little spine darkened, small chip out of the spine of Volume I, larger chip out of the spine of Volume IV. Contemporary owner's inscription to Volume I. Even a *mixed* set of this first book edition of Pickwick in original condition is quite desirable and exceedingly uncommon to find in commerce. The first issue of Volume I (by a then-unknown Dickens) was printed in a tiny edition of 1500 and clearly did not survive in any numbers which is why mixed sets tend to be the norm (when you can find one, that is). This preceded the English hardcover edition and thus has additional importance beyond just being its first appearance in the U.S. Bookseller Inventory # 001905
