Description:

148 by 5.5 inches. The first edition of this famous folding panorama of the Hudson river, showing both banks, beginning at Albany and ending at Manhattan. At more than 12 feet long, Wade and Croome's Panorama is one of the most impressive feats of mid-19th century cartography, with buildings, landmarks, and vegetation shown in remarkable detail. 'This novel and interesting plan of the beautiful and romantic Hudson represents the stream (having various river craft upon its surface), with a spirited and accurate continuous view of each bank, as seen by the traveler from the middle of the river. The counties, cities, towns, villages, landing places, etc.,.are delineated. The whole [is] engraved in the best manner on copper, and carefully colored. The merit and accuracy of the work may be imagined from the fact that Mr. Wade spent an entire season of travel upon the river to take the necessary views of the extended shore on both sides.'--Wiley and Putnam's Literary News-Letter, July 1845. References: Sabin 33519 (title incorrect); Stokes and Haskell, American Historical Prints, P. 1844, E-59m. First edition, with full period handcolor. An excellent copy, with minor wear to the folds and little foxing. Skillfully, almost invisibly, rebacked; endpaper replaced with matching paper of the period; new ties, one repair to map fold.
