Jarves was the editor of an early weekly newspaper in the Hawaiian Islands, the Polynesian (1840–48), and author of "Parisian Sights and French Principles." During the 1850s, Jarves relocated to Florence, Italy where he served as the U.S. vice-consul and collected art. The Yale University Art Gallery purchased 119 early Italian paintings from Jarves, spanning the centuries from the tenth to the seventeenth, which had been refused by other American museums, they paid only $22,000. His account of French aristocracy, manners and principles, attire and Paris establishments is accompanied with illustrations throughout. A very entertaining early look at Parisian life. Light foxing throughout, cloth binding is solid but does show wear especially along the edges. Size: 5½" x 7½" 0.0. Bookseller Inventory # 273389
