Description:

Small Quarto. Cloth Hardcover, 1927. First Edition. Ex-library with the usual treatments. Vol. I: "Photographs and Descriptions," vi + 32pp, with 2 plates (including tissue-guarded frontispiece) and 51 linen-backed silver photographs. Vol. II: "Charts and Tables," unpaginated, with 50 illustrated charts. Both volumes are uniformly bound in original tan buckram with gilt lettering on the sides. Part II slightly taller. Covers mildly shelfworn, with spine of Part I partially shellacked. Tape remnants at both spine heads. The joints and hinges are strong, and the textblocks are quite sturdy. The pages are clean and intact; Part I's frontis has off-set onto the title page. One small withdrawn stamp on the margin of Part II's first chart; otherwise all charts and photographs are complete and unblemished. A very scarce collectible, only 700 copies of this pivotal astronomic atlas of the Milky Way galaxy were printed. Before his death, author and astronomer E.E. Barnard personally inspected the 37,500 photographs used in the publication to ensure their quality and accuracy. Pictures were taken with the Bruce photographic telescope at the Yerkes Observatory in Williams Bay, WI (pictured in one plate), and at Mount Wilson in CA. Bookseller Inventory #
