Description:

Finely bound in the original half burgundy morocco, gilt spine, raised bands, marbled end-papers; cloth boards; pages watermarked 1817 and 1818. Embelished with 24 highly finished, hand-colored engravings and large engraved folding map by W. Bartlett with color highlights depicting the course of the Rhine from Mentz to Cologne. Light offseting. A very good copy without any restoration work done. The binding joints are weak but still intact and the spine is chipped but holding pages tight. The plates are very clean with occasional traces of very light foxing. Some browning to interior but mainly clean. First edition. In this copy the Mentz plate is dated October 1819 while the Cologne plate is dated February 1820. An early issue in original binding with plates unumbered pulled and hand-colored in the Ackermann studio, whose reputation for producing splendid illustrated publications and fine aquatint prints spanned over two centuaries.
