Synopsis: A novel by controversial author and filmmaker Catherine Breillat, from which her own 2004 film, Anatomy of Hell, was adapted. In this poetic-polemic novel, Catherine Breillat brings her signature exploration of politics and mores to a shocking conclusion: A woman observes men in a club where they go to be without women. She then goes to the ladies room and slices her wrists. Asked the meaning of her suicide attempt, she replies: 'Because I am a woman'. The woman then suggests to the man who saves her 'watch her where she is unwatchable.' There follow four nights of confrontation where the two examine the female sex.

About the Author: Catherine Breillat was born in Bressuire, France, in 1948, and developed a reputation for challenging public mores early. At 17, she published her first novel, L'homme Facile, which became a cause célèbre for its blunt language and open depiction of sexual subject matter. Since then she has adapted her own novels into ten films, which she has directed. Between 1968 and 1975 she published three novels and a stage drama and made her acting debut in Bernardo Bertolucci's Last Tango in Paris. In 1975, Breillat moved behind the camera by writing, designing and directing Une Vraie Jeune Fille adapted from her novel.
