Circa 1890. Two volume set, blue cloth binding with lovely gilt and silver illustration on front of three feathers with ribbon. Rubbing, cloth has been pieced in to repair spine. Volume 1 - 451 pages with 8 portrait plates, complete. Volume 2 - 439 pages with 10 portrait plates, complete. Grace Wharton was the pseudonym of Katherine Thomson (1797-1862), an English novelist and historian. This work is a collection of anecdotal biographies of prominent women in English and French society from the 16th to the early 19th century. It was written with her son, John Cockburn Thomson. These copies are inscribed by influential New York drama critic William Winter (1836-1917) to his wife, novelist Elizabeth Campbell Winter. On front fly leaves of both volumes, "A Christmas Remembrance to my Dear Lizzie, with love and blessing. 1890". Also on the fly leaves, "Elizabeth Campbell Winter. 17 Third Avenue New Brighton. S.
