Description:

1st Printing. 243 pages. Published in 1986. Book-length analysis of the American mass media. One of the best books ever written on the subject. The Notable Trials Library Limited Edition. Should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published by special arrangement with Alfred A. Knopf in a small and limited one-time-only print run whose limitation is not stated and as a hardcover original only. There is no ISBN. The Limited Edition is now scarce. The book is very elegantly produced, with green cloth boards, green leather overboards, gilt titles on the cover and spine, gilt page edges, marbled endpapers, green satin ribbon marker, and printed on archival stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents, in a Limited Edition format, Renata Adler's "Reckless Disregard". Accuses the omnipotent American mass media of irresponsibility, dishonesty, and complete absence of ethical standards in its relentless and unscrupulous search for a story. Renata Adler, who studied with Claude Levi-Strauss and Jean Wahl, has a Law Degree from Yale University even though she never practiced (or ran for public office). She claims she never intended to practice, but feels that in order to be a good, let alone great, journalist, it is necessary to understand the way lawyers think - she believes the country is run by lawyers - in order to appropriate their rigorous, analytical approach to use against them. As such, one will readily understand why her book has never been surpassed in its critical acumen and withering analysis of the way the American mass-media establishment is run. Renata Adler is THE media critic of our time, the preeminent critic of modern journalism and The Media, whose power, as it has grown, has become not accountable to anyone, is often exercised irresponsibly, and is finally as corrupt, if not more so, as the powers-that-be. Her indictment is compelling and will stand. An absolute "must-have" title for Renata Adler collectors. This title is a great book. This is one of very few copies of The Notable Trials Library Limited Edition still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare copy thus. One of the greatest American writers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER RENATA ADLER TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). Bookseller Inventory # 19945
